Triangular Plot

This is a Triangular Plot which shows three different variables and their data using a triangular shape. This plot shows the percentage of votes distributed between the Labour, Conservative, and Liberal Democratic parties in an election in the UK

Index Value Plot

This is a Index Value Plot which takes the index value of a variable and plots it to see if there are any discrepancies. It also shows whether there was a positive or negative change in the index value. This plot shows the rainfall recorded in inches in Oregon from 1999 until 2006. Four inches is the normal rainfall for the area and is the base number.

Lorenz Curve

This is a Lorenz curve which is a graph formed by showing the concentration of ownership of certain economic quantities. This map allows for one to analyze how much economic success one has made.

Bilateral graph

This is a bilateral graph which shows the correlation between two or more different sets of variables. This example is considered a bilateral graph because it is using two variables, energy use per capital and energy use per dollar GDP to determine energy use throughout the US.

Similarity Matrix


This is a similarity matrix which visualizes the strength of similarity between multiple variables. This is helpful when trying to determine which variable can be substituted for another. This similarity matrix shows the temporal similarity of a collection of 512 photos. 

Correlation Matrix

 This is a correlation matrix that shows a correlation between variables. It visualizes the strength correlation between multiple variables. This correlation matrix shows variables between tissues.

DOQQ Map

This is a Digital Orthoquarter Quads which is developed from raster images from aerial photos. Depending upon the film used, they are presented in real or true color or false infrared color. This picture is a red colored DOQQ of a 500 year flood plain. This image could help planners prepare for the next major flood and prevent major catastrophe.

Isopach Maps

This is a Isopach map which shows the thickness of rock or land using contour lines. These are commonly used for resource excavation purposes such as coal, graphite, gold, etc. This specific map shows the thickness of the lower region of Texas into the Panhandle region. You can see the isopach lines as they nearer the east coast become thinner.

Cartographic Animations

This is a Cartographic animations which are used to show how things will move and the time span that they will accomplish that movement. They are often used on weather and news channels to portray where a storm may be heading. In my example you can see the projected path of Hurricane Dean and how it will hit Cuba and possibly Texas.

Proportional Circle Map

This is a proportional circle map which represents certain information in a certain area by using circles proportionate to the represented information. If the circles are small then the number of what ever is being measured is small. The map shows the bailout money that was allocated to each state. As you can see the bigger circles in the north east show large sums of money.

PLSS Map

This is a Public Land Survey Systems Map (PLSS) that subdivides land in a geographic area, similar to the cadastral map. It generally uses a series of rectangles to subdivide land to show which land is available. This map shows principal areas and base lines across the United States

Hyposomentric Map

This is a hypsometric map that is a type of topographic map, similar to planimetric with the exception it includes elevation using contour lines. This map shows the elevations in a section of France and as you can see it is clearly visible. 

Propaganda Map

This is a Propaganda Map of the United States made by the Historum department of Texas. These maps usually distort some aspect of the map to an extreme usually to prove a point or establish power. This map depicts the state of Texas overtaking the whole United States and the labels on the  remaining states poke fun at each one.

This is a Shaded Relief map, which uses shades to show relief features of the terrain. In this map of Cambodia you can see the different mountain ranges and valleys following the shading key.

This is an isoline map which uses lines to connect equal values or points of interest. In this map it shows the South Pole and has the longitudinal lines running vertically from it.

Thematic Map

This is a Thematic map which is supposed to show different themes for a particular area. These themes can range from social, economic, political, etc. In this map it shows Canada and the increases in terms of population change.

Planimetric Map

This is a planimetric map which is used to display horizontal information and exclude the vertical allowing for a strictly 2D viewing. These maps are useful for directions and seeing where things are oriented in a city. This map show the Lake George area in New york and as you can see it is very plain.

This is a Digital Elevation Map, these maps show the elevation of the terrain below using scanning technology. This DEM shows Antarctica's elevation using lighter and darker shading.

LIDAR

This is a LIDAR map which uses laser lights on the bottom of a plane to scan the surface and return information on the terrain below. This LIDAR depicts ground zero in Manhattan and you can see how it clearly changed the terrain of the area.

This is an aerial photograph that shows the terrain of the British Open in Scotland. These types of images are extremely useful as they let us know what is changing on our landscape and allows us compare the past to present.

Infrared Aerial Photo

This is an infrared aerial photograph that shows a region using infrared radar. This allows us to see thru the water and atmosphere and see vegetation. This image shows the growing vegetation between the border of England and Wales.

Population Profile

This is a population profile, these maps show the spread of ages for numerous factors such as fertility rate or death rate. This profile shows the shift of younger people to more older people in the future as our birth control methods are being heightened.

Flow Map

This is a flow map which usually shows the flow of people out of a region and into another. This lets analyzers see where people are moving too and from where. This map shows the truck outflows from Texas. The thicker the line the more weight is being transported along that line.

Scatter Plot

This is a scatter plot that shows the relationship between distance, cases, and time. Each point represents a specific data set and this map is different than most plots as its includes a third variable.

Isotachs

This map is used to connect areas of the country with the same wind speed which is extremely helpful in finding the location of the jet stream. This map uses contour lines to show areas of wind speed and follows it up with color shading to show areas of high windspeed such as the jet stream.

Isohyet

This is a Isohyet map that uses ishyetal lines to show areas of equal rainfall. These maps are helpful in determining what areas receive the heaviest rainfall. This map shows the average yearly rainfall over Guam for the last 50 years and lets the viewer easily see the areas of high precipitation.

This map is a Isopleth map which measures the pH in the precipitation in the United States and analyzes the precipitations sodium ion concentration. This uses color shading to show areas of high and low concentration and shows the whole country.

Digital Raster Graphic

This is a digital raster graphic that is used to show a clearer view of a specific area. This is basically a paper map that was created by scanning the original copy into a database. This DRG shows a portion of the Washington DC area where viewers can easily see what is happening around the Potomac river.

This is a star plot which is a graphical method of displaying multivariate data in the form of an alternate chart. This example is a plot from NASA within the center is the most desireable analysis results as this plot is based around MER IDD represented by the red line.

DLG Map

This is a Digital Line Graph which is a digital vector data set representing cartographic information showing a wide variety of features. This DLG is a representation of the Palo Alto area where the data is stores as lines and points in order to accurately represent the creek itself.

This is a climograph which is a representation of climate in a specific region, usually showing monthly average temperature and precipitation as in this case. This map shows the averages of Boulder, Colorado showing the months with high precipitation and areas of low rainfall.

Windrose

This is a Windrose plot which is a graphic tool used by meteorologists to give a detailed interpretation of the direction and speed of the wind at a particular area. This map shows the wind in Olympia, Washington and shows how fast and direction using shading to represent wind speed.

This is a Box plot that is used to graphically depict a group of numerical data through their five-number summaries. As you can see in the plot it is easy to analyze the two numerical data sets and find their median.

Stem and Leaf Plot

This is a Stem and Leaf plot that is used to present numerical data without having to using multiple integers. The data found on the left is considered the stem, while the other numbers are the leaves. This plot shows the infant mortality rates in Western Africa and can be seen that it is extremely high.

3D Parallel Coordinate Graph

This is a Parallel Coordinate Graph that is used to display numerous amounts of datasets. As you can see this image has numerous data in it as each line is a different plot of data going through a 3D plane.

Doppler Radar

This is a Doppler Radar image of Hurricane Andrew as it came ashore in south Florida. This type of imaging allows us to see significant weather before it affects us and allows us to accurately tell the weather. The image also uses a color shading scale to show areas of high and low rain.

This is a cartogram that shows each state in United States rescaled to accurately depict population. The map is distorted so as to convey the information in a easier alternate method. This maps are extremely useful for manipulating the information into a more realistic approach.

Dasymetric Map

This is a dasymetric map that is a thematic map used to classify volumetric data such as population density and in this case temperature. It has the ability to realistically place data as to allow the viewer easy analysis of the map. This map shows median minimal temperatures for the American continent using shading and a key.

Univariate Choropleth Map

This is a univariate choropleth map that depicts the poverty of individuals around the United States. The areas with darker shading are areas of high poverty and vice versa. This map uses a single image to convey its point and is shown using colors and shading.

This is a cave survey map that shows the elevation and distance the crescent cave encompasses. This map is extremely important because it can mean a matter of life or death if someone needs to quickly analyze the map and get out. The simpler the better is the case for this type of map.

This is a cadastre map that shows the comprehensive boundaries of this fortification. It shows the bounds of the real property of the area and includes ownership notifications.

This is a bivariate choropleth map that shows the population density in the southern region of Russia. You can clearly see the difference in shading showing the different densities over the certain regions of Russia. The left map shows the change over a few years in density and it allows people to see two different variables at the same time.

This is a bathymetric map that shows the topography of the ocean off the coast of Tasmania. This map type depicts the ocean floor and shows how rapidly the ocean may drop off and where deep points are. This map type is especially useful for fisherman as the knowledge of where ocean ledges are allow them to catch more fish.

Aeronautical map

This is an aeronautical map that shows the areas which different airports control. It also shows certain cities and which direction the runway is oriented. This is such a map because it encompasses radio channels for which the planes use to contact the airport control tower to secure a safe landing. It also allows pilots a way to land planes without GPS.
